Rich Countries Should Fulfill Their Financing Pledges - The World Bank
Jeffrey Sachs, the well-known Harvard economist and a Special Advisor to the UN's Secretary General, urged rich countries yesterday to deliver on their promises of financing for development at the opening session of ESSD Week 2004, the World Bank's annual learning and knowledge-sharing event on Sustainable Development. "The United States, Europe and Japan," said Sachs, "are not fulfilling their financing pledges, and it's time for them to realize that without that support, countries in the developing world are not going to lift their people out from poverty."

On Sunday, speaking about the situation in Haiti, President Bush said, "President Aristide resigned. He has left his country. The Constitution of Haiti is working. There is an interim President, as per the Constitution, in place. "I have ordered the deployment of Marines, as the leading element of an interim international force, to help bring order and stability to Haiti. I have done so in working with the international community. This government believes it essential that Haiti have a hopeful future. This is the beginning of a new chapter in the country's history."
