APEC Summiteering
President Bush attended the annual APEC summit this week. Allies welcomed American leadership at a time when the North Korean nuclear crisis threatens the entire region and new missile tests upstaged the conference. Detractors accused Bush of hijacking the conference and forcing security issues to the top of the agenda and away from the traditional economic focus. The summit produced no new treaties, but it did reinforce prior commitments to forging a new free trade block by 2020.
