Taiwan Relations Act of 1979: On March 29, 1979, Congress passed a bill (HR 2479) establishing a new relationship with Taiwan following U.S. recognition of the People's Republic of China. President Carter signed the bill (PL 96-8) into law on April 10. The Act is not a defense treaty and does not obligate the U.S. to defend Taiwan.
