Web Resource: The War on Terror
The Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs presents two views of the war on terror, the Realist vs. the Idealist view. According to international security expert John Mearsheimer, President Bush has failed to make the case for conventional warfare against an axis of evil powers. "Swooping out of the sky and doing away with countries is not sustainable as a method of handling the nuclear proliferation problem." In contrast to Mearsheimer, journalists William Kristol and Lawrence Kaplan argue that the war in Iraq, coupled with a nation-building effort in that country, will serve as proof of the compatibility between America's ideals and its national interests.
